Built in 1890, The Arcade was designed by the renowned architects John Eisenmann and George H. Smith, who also designed the Terminal Tower in Cleveland. The Arcade was built as a mixed-use space, featuring offices, shops, and a hotel. The building was constructed using steel and cast iron and features a central atrium that spans 300 feet and is five stories tall.
The Arcade quickly became a popular destination for locals and visitors alike, with its luxurious accommodations and high-end shops. It was the first indoor shopping mall in the United States and is often cited as a precursor to modern shopping malls. The Arcade also hosted many notable events throughout its history, including political rallies, fashion shows, and even a boxing match.
Despite its initial success, The Arcade faced many challenges in the 20th century. The Great Depression and World War II took a toll on the building’s businesses, and it began to fall into disrepair. In the 1970s, the building was nearly demolished to make way for a parking garage, but a group of concerned citizens fought to save it. The Arcade was eventually restored and reopened in 2001 as a Hyatt Regency hotel, with shops and restaurants occupying the lower levels.
Today, The Cleveland Arcade remains a popular destination for locals and visitors alike, with its stunning architecture and unique blend of history and modern amenities. The building has been recognized by the National Register of Historic Places and is a beloved landmark in Cleveland.
